Jobs in Wichita KS What's Changed and What You Need to Know in 2026
If you're thinking about relocating to Wichita KS and the job market is one of your deciding factors this is the honest breakdown you've been looking for.
Here's the thing most people don't realize: every major employer list for Wichita KS online right now is outdated. The city's own website. The university career pages. The business journals. All of them. And the number one employer in Wichita just changed its name.
I'm James McGrew Jr., a full-time Wichita Realtor® with Real Broker, LLC. I've been working with buyers and sellers across Wichita and the surrounding communities since 2019 including relocation buyers from all over the country who are researching the job market here before they make their move. I covered this topic in full on my YouTube channel watch the complete video here:

Let's get into what actually changed and what it means for anyone considering a move here.
THE BOEING STORY THE BIGGEST UPDATE IN THE MARKET
Let's address this first because it changes everything.
The City of Wichita's official employer list still shows Spirit AeroSystems as the number one employer. But here's what that list hasn't caught up on yet in December 2025 Boeing completed its acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems. The Air Capital of the World's largest employer is now Boeing again.
For anyone who knows Wichita's history Boeing built this city's aerospace identity over decades. Having them back under the Boeing name isn't just a rebranding. It's a statement about the long-term stability of this job market and Wichita's role in U.S. aerospace manufacturing.
If you're searching for aerospace jobs in Wichita right now search Boeing, not Spirit AeroSystems. The job boards and career pages haven't all caught up yet.
THE FULL EMPLOYER PICTURE
Here are the major employers in Wichita based on the most current available data from the City of Wichita's official employer list https://www.wichita.gov/245/Major-Employers. A quick note before we get into it this list reflects publicly available information and the numbers are subject to change. Do your own research on current openings and hiring activity for any employer you're interested in. The point here is to give you a clear picture of the economic landscape, not guarantee specific job availability.- Boeing / Spirit AeroSystems- Largest employer in the city. Aircraft assemblies. Became Boeing December 2025.
- Textron Aviation- Aircraft manufacturer. Cessna and Beechcraft. Born and built right here in Wichita.
- McConnell Air Force Base- Significant U.S. Air Force presence in the city.
- Wichita Public Schools USD 259- Largest school district in Kansas.
- Ascension Via Christi Health -One of two major hospital systems serving the region.
- Koch Industries- Here's the one that surprises almost every relocation buyer I talk to. Koch Industries one of the largest private companies in the entire world is headquartered right here in Wichita, Kansas. Not New York. Not Chicago. Wichita.
- City of Wichita- Municipal government employment across every department.
- Wichita State University- Higher education and research.
- U.S. Government -Federal positions across multiple agencies.
- Sedgwick County- County government.
- State of Kansas -Higher education and government.
- Wesley Healthcare -The second major hospital system in Wichita.
- Johnson Controls- HVAC equipment manufacturing.
- Bombardier -Aircraft manufacturer and testing.
Between Ascension Via Christi and Wesley Healthcare you've got two major hospital systems in this market. And the healthcare employment picture here is about to get significantly larger.
That's 14 major employers across aerospace, healthcare, government, manufacturing, and education. This is not a one-industry town and that economic diversity is one of the things that makes Wichita a stable place to plant roots.
WHAT'S COMING 2026 AND BEYOND
The Wichita job market isn't standing still. Two significant developments are worth knowing about before you make your decision:
WSU Biomedical Campus A $300 million healthcare and research campus opening spring 2027. 471,000 square feet of new space dedicated to healthcare and biomedical research right here in the city. The healthcare employment picture in Wichita is already strong this takes it to another level.
WSU Tech NCAT Expansion A $45 million expansion of the National Center for Aviation Training focused on aviation and transportation technology. More aerospace and advanced manufacturing jobs on the way for a market that's already the Air Capital of the World.
Boeing just came back. A $300 million healthcare campus opens in 2027. The job market here is not standing still.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR MOVE
The employment base here is deep and diverse. But what makes Wichita genuinely different from most markets isn't just the jobs it's what those jobs buy you.
If you're relocating from a higher cost market San Diego, Seattle, Denver, Houston you're probably used to your income being eaten up by housing costs. The same income that barely covers rent somewhere else buys you a house here.
The median sale price in this market is $248,000. That math changes everything.
